The Edmonton Oilers dropped their second loss in a row to the Toronto Maple Leafs following their Saturday beatdown to the Minnesota Wild.
Tuesday’s hockey game started out on a good foot with both teams battling for the first goal which wouldn’t come until Matias Maccelli of the Maple Leafs broke the proverbial ice.
Jake Walman of the Oilers responded back to tie the game, but Matthew Knies was able to resecure Toronto’s lead only nine seconds later.
Kasperi Kapanen, the former Maple Leaf, retied the game for Edmonton assisted by Vasily Podkolzin early into the third period; the game looked tight, it could go anyone’s way. For a mid-season February game before the player break, this was as competitive as it gets in the NHL.
And then the refs gifted the Leafs a two minute long 5-on-3 powerplay that won them the game. Lovely. Matt Savoie was given the weakest interference call of the season, and seconds into the penalty kill Matthias Janmark was called for a high sticking on Auston Matthews… which he only incurred because the ref opted not to call interference or hooking on Auston Matthews.
The Leafs scored two quick goals after that (it’s hard not to when you have a two man advantage for two minutes) and the game was over. Anthony Stolarz made a couple big saves to make sure that Toronto wouldn’t choke their lead away, and Toronto would go on to win the game 5-2 with an empty net goal.
What could have been a fun game was ultimately ruined by some horrible officiating in the third period, which is unfortunately just a preview of how the playoffs will look if the last couple years are any indication.
Moral of the story? Work on your 5-on-3 penalty kill, I guess.
Edmonton will faceoff against the Calgary Flames for their last Battle-of-Alberta for the season Wednesday night in the Saddledome.
