Edmonton continued on their streak of high quality hockey beating the Boston Bruins 3-1 in convincing fashion, but it came at the cost of losing their newly acquired goaltender Tristan Jarry.
There were nine penalties on the night, and Edmonton scored on their first crack. Connor McDavid fired a shot off Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to open the scoring, and the Bruins tied up the game in short order on their own power play.
Jarry made 12 saves before leaving the ice after tweaking his lower body on a fairly routine play. The new goaltender pushed off the post and immediately knew something was wrong; Pickard would come in as relief to make another 12 saves. Seeing Jarry injured is very bad, to put it lightly. Calvin Pickard can backstop for a time, but he is no where close to shouldering a starter load and Connor Ingram has not been great in the AHL. If Jarry stays injured, things might get hairy.
On the positive side Quinn Hutson scored his first NHL goal off a beautiful backhand for the game winning goal; the goal came in only his fourth NHL game, and in his second game played of this season.
Once the Oilers got their go ahead goal, they never looked back. Edmonton shut down the Bruins offense and thrusted a dagger into their heart with a shorthanded goal from McDavid assisted by a stretch pass from Nugent-Hopkins.
The Oilers’ next challenge will be a gauntlet; they’ll be facing the Minnesota Wild, who traditionally have Edmonton’s number, and they’ll be playing a matinee game at 1 0’clock.
Scheduled loss? Maybe, we’ll see on Saturday.
