It was a battle of the exes; Tristan Jarry vs. Stuart Skinner. Both goalies were traded from their respective teams less than one week ago, but Jarry came out on top in a game where the Oilers took control after a couple of quick power play goals. Leon Draisaitl scored his 1000th point, and three more, with four assists on the night, and the Oilers delivered Pittsburgh’s 6th loss in a row.

The Penguins scored the first goal of the night early on, but it was quickly taken back as Ben Kindel was offside. Pittsburgh fell apart and took three penalties – including a delay of game penalty from Brett Kulak – and gave the Oilers an extended 5-on-3 opportunity which proved fatal. Leon Draisaitl scored his 1000th point on a secondary assist going to the usual suspects, McDavid and Hyman, and the Oilers bench swarmed the German superstar to celebrate while Stuart Skinner stood idly by in a bittersweet moment.

Connor McDavid was playing like a man possessed and extended the Oilers’ lead a mere 14 seconds later after burning through the Penguins defense and wrapping the puck around Skinner’s left pad. For the first time ever Edmonton found themselves on the favorable end of back-to-back Skinner goals – but to his credit, the Penguins defense was to blame.

Thomas Novak scored in the final minute of the first, but Edmonton responded by dominating the second period. Matt Savoie scored his 7th of the year, and Bouchard fired a rocket past Stuart Skinner extending the lead.

Pittsburgh allowed a 3-on-1 from Draisaitl, Savoie, and Podkolzin in the third period which effectively put the game out of reach for the Penguins. Skinner made an initial save on the rush but had no support and Podkolzin had no problem securing the rebound as the former Oiler tried to make a desperate lateral save.

The Penguins defense looked oddly similar to Edmonton for the first twenty games of the season – loads of breakaways and poor stick management in front of their goaltender.

It was out of the fire and into the frying pan for Skinner on Tuesday night.

The Penguins were able to score twice more after Connor McDavid recorded an empty net goal and the Oilers stopped playing defense, but with only seconds left to play it was no use, Edmonton would win the match handedly (at the expense of Jarry’s save percentage for the evening).

In a nice moment in the tail end of the third Connor McDavid gave Skinner a tap on the pads as the game was wrapping up. It was the least he could do after lighting up the goaltender that had backstopped his team to the last two Stanley Cup finals.

All the best to Stuart Skinner; hopefully the change of scenery allows him to become the goalie that Edmonton drafted and developed him to be; but on Tuesday night, the Oilers were more than happy to show they are an offensive juggernaut capable of making Swiss cheese of any goaltender in the league.

Quote of the week

Now we have the mindset to attack more; I think you see that – we’re attacking the net more.”
