On Tuesday night, Edmonton was held scoreless through sixty minutes and lost to a goalie with four shutouts this season (a goalie they could have drafted), in a one goal game off a fluke faceoff shot that shouldn’t have gone in. It was boring Minnesota Wild hockey, and the narratives surrounding Jesper Wallstedt made it agonizing.
Well, Edmonton bounced back from their 1-0 loss to Minnesota by brow beating the Kraken with nine goals. The final score was 9-4, but Seattle’s final goal came with only seconds left to play – and they only got the goal because the Oilers were all cheating for offence.
“WE WANT TEN. WE WANT TEN.”
The Oilers gave the fans in Edmonton lots to cheer for on Thursday evening. Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Mattias Janmark, and Vasily Podkolzin all recorded goals. Matt Savoie, whose been snake bitten of late, scored two goals (and nearly scored a third). Connor McDavid scored his 13th hat trick, which ties him with Mark Messier for fourth most hat tricks in Oilers franchise history.
Edmonton bulldozed the Kraken through the first 15 minutes, opening the game 3-0, but Seattle fired back and scored twice before the first was done. Seattle’s second goal came off an uncharacteristically bad turnover from Leon Draisaitl which allowed Freddy Gaudreau a red carpet to beating Calvin Pickard in the slot with 30 seconds left to play.
The building was tense, but not for long. Connor Clattenburg took an early cross-checking penalty, which is usually a bad things, but the Oilers won the faceoff draw and Evan Bouchard found a stretch pass to Matt Savoie who sealed the shorthanded deal with a backhand.
After that, the wheels were off. McDavid scored a wrister four minutes later, and Zach Hyman scored a backhand shortly after that. Jared McCann of the Kraken to give Seattle some form of life, but that hope was evaporated as Mattias Janmark snapped a 42 regular season game scoreless streak at the start of the third period.
Brandon Montour carelessly hit Connor Clattenburg in the eye and took a double minor high sticking penalty. He didn’t return to the game, and at the time of writing his status is unknown. Clattenburg has been a force of nature in his short tenure in Edmonton so far, it would be a shame for him to get injured during a game that was completely out of reach for the away squad. Edmonton made the Kraken pay, however. McDavid scored his hat trick goal, and Matt Savoie scored his second – both on the Clattenburg powerplay.
As mentioned, the Kraken scored a fourth goal in garbage time, but it meant less than nothing. The Oilers were playing pond hockey – hard not to when the crowd is chanting at playoff level decibels. “WE WANT TEN.” When you’re up six goals you can afford to play a little silly.
Edmonton plays their next game against the Winnipeg Jets, who will be playing without Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyck has had Edmonton’s number for years, so Saturday’s game will be a lucky opportunity to snag two points that they might not otherwise get.
