Another Oilers game, another rollercoaster. The Oilers went from being up 20 shots and a goal on the Flyers, to being tied, to being down 2-1 with half a minute to play, to winning in overtime.

The low scoring affair started with a low shot first period. It took 15 minutes for both teams to register 5 shot attempts, and 19 minutes for Edmonton to open the scoring. Late in the first Savoie and McDavid entered the zone with speed. Savoie passed to McDavid who attempted to bank a tight shot over Vladar’s shoulder – who made the save, but created a rebound; while McDavid wrapped around the net Savoie pushed the rebound out from the crease, McDavid collected the puck, passed to Bouchad, and Evan Bouchard rocketed a shot passed Vladar to get the first goal of the night.

Edmonton drove play through the second period until an unfortunate hooking call taken by Jake Walman. The Flyers were able to beat Stuart Skinner with a fast cycle power play that led to Evan Bouchard and Matthias Ekholm creating a screen on their own goalie, allowing Matvei Michkov to beat Skinner from distance. It was an ugly goal that came after a strong period that should have gone Edmonton’s way, and to add insult to injury, the shot attempts were 24-7. Edmonton was outshooting Philadelphia 3-to-1 and had nothing but a tie game to show for it.

The third period was a stalemate until the dying final seconds where Edmonton collapsed in their own end and allowed another permitter shot to get past Skinner. The game was 2-1 Flyers with 30 seconds left to play, and it looked over – but as it turns out, the play was offside. Because the goal was scored in the final minute, the NHL automatically reviewed the play for a missed offside stoppage, and Owen Tippet was offside by a mile.

Edmonton found the win in overtime courtesy of Matt Savoie and Jack Roslovic. Travis Sanheim fanned a pass in center ice that was picked off by Roslovic to Savoie; they rushed forward with a two man breakaway and Roslovic was able to bury a one-timer off a quick feed from Savoie to beat Dan Vladar for the game winner.

Edmonton got lucky with the offside call tonight, which saved them two points in the standings. But to their credit the Oilers made sure to attack hard after the Flyers had the wind taken out of their sails. Roslovic scored his second overtime winner in back-to-back games, which is tied for the franchise record, and one short of tying the NHL record.

Maybe we’ll see him tie the record tonight as the Oilers rematch against the Blue Jackets.

Now we have the mindset to attack more; I think you see that – we’re attacking the net more.”
