The third period wasn’t pretty by any stretch, but Edmonton was able to fend off the Senators attack long enough to secure their first win in four games.

Adamn Henrique played his 1000th game in the NHL tonight. He took the first face off alongside McDavid and Draisaitl, and Henrique got an early shot on net – no goal, but Edmonton started building momentum from the very first shift.

The Oilers were given a powerplay opportunity late in the first period and were finally able to convert after their week long dry spell. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gained possession behind the Ottawa net and found Connor McDavid with a centering pass, and McDavid wristed a perfectly placed shot in the top right corner for his first goal of this season, and the opening goal of the night.

Edmonton continued laying it on early in the second. Draisaitl had a drive and a slapshot that was deflected wide by Linus Ullmark. The rebound went wide and Connor McDavid fought Ridly Greig for possession, ultimately tripping him up with no call. Draisaitl collected the puck and drove into the zone before passing to Isaac Howard who rocketed a low shot directly through Ullmark for his first goal in the NHL.

Ottawa didn’t die without a fight, though. The Senators found their way onto the scoreboard with a powerplay goal 13 seconds into the third period. Some miscommunication in the Oilers defense allowed Dylan Cozens to scoop the puck off the boards and sail towards the net unpressured, beating Skinner cleanly off the rush.

Less than two minutes later Thomas Chabot tied the game for Ottawa with a slap shot off the blue line. Brett Kulak and Ty Emberson didn’t put in enough work to get the Ottawa attackers away from the net – the end result was a four man screen to block Chabot’s shot, and Stuart Skinner never had a chance.

The match went to overtime for decision. Evan Bouchard punched through Ottawa for a quick scoring chance. No shot on his drive, but he managed to draw a slahing call on Tim Stützle. The Senators fended off the the Edmonton powerplay for 1:55 before Linus Ullmark’s mask was knocked off his head. Play was stopped Matt Savoie took a faceoff draw from the left dot; Savoie won the draw cleanly and tapped the puck over to Ekholm, who redirected the puck backwards to Jake Walman. Walman didn’t think for a second and without missing a beat launched a cannon shot over Ullmark’s shoulder for the overtime winner.

All around a good game for Edmonton. McDavid finally scored a goal, Isaac Howard scored his first, Jake Walman scored his first goal since coming back from injury, and the Oilers broke their early season losing slump. It would have been nice to not give up the two goal lead early in the second, but unlike their weekend games, Edmonton was able to cauterize their bleeding quickly.

The Oilers are now back to Edmonton for a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

Quote of the week

Now we have the mindset to attack more; I think you see that – we’re attacking the net more.”
