The New York Rangers had 30 shots and 3 powerplay opportunities Tuesday evening, but it was nowhere close to enough to take down the Edmonton Oilers in their first road trip game of the season.

The game winning goal came from Trent Frederic, assisted by Kasperi Kapanen with a cross ice feed. Adam Henrique would score on an empty net in the dying final minutes to put the game out of reach.

New York looked dangerous all game, but Skinner frustrated the Rangers squad – which had an expected goals scored of 4, compared to their actual goals scored of 0. If you played this game back ten times, the Rangers probably win it 8 out of 10 times. Skinner stole a game for a huge two points to keep Edmonton cruising through the start of the season.

The Oilers defence is owed credit as well; loose pucks were quickly cleared out back and to the side. High danger chances in the slot were nullified almost immediately. Skinner had time and space to deal with what the Rangers sharpshooters could muster near the edges, and when he didn’t have the time he was able to make a few key acrobatic saves.

Edmonton beat out the Rangers in shots blocked (23-11), faceoffs (23-20), and takeaways (6-1). The Oilers also had way more giveaways (18-13), luckily none turned into goals against.

And to rub salt in the wound, this isn’t the first time New York has been shut out this season – they’ve failed to score a goal in all three of their home ice games. And it gets worse, no other NHL team has ever been shutout in their first three home games – until tonight that is.

Not a great time to be a season ticket holder in Madison Square Garden.

Up next, the Edmonton Oilers look play the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Now we have the mindset to attack more; I think you see that – we’re attacking the net more.”
